The Brockville Cenotaph was unveiled on Friday
May 23, 1924, honouring those who died in the Great
War. The ceremony featured a choir of 200 girls
from the public and separate schools performing
The Maple Leaf Forever.
The monument was unveiled by Hon. George P. Graham,
the minister of railways and canals and publisher
of the Recorder and Times. The bronze figure was
modelled after Major Thain Wendell MacDowell, a
local man who earned the Victoria Cross for his
bravery at Vimy Ridge.
It was sculpted by Nicolas Pirotton. The Cenotaph
was constructed by McIntosh Granite Company of Toronto
and designed by the Allis - Chalmers Company also
